Exploring the Outdoors of Richmond, Virginia

There really is no limit as to what there is to do in Richmond Virginia. If you are an outdoors junkie or want to get out more, Richmond is by far the best spot on the east coast. You can go fishing, kayaking, hiking, running, and the list goes on and on. It all depends on what interests you the most and if you are willing to get out there. I absolutely love the trails on the James River Park System for hiking and biking and that is just the tip of the iceberg there. The James River Park System trails connect to other trails in the surrounding area to amplify your experience. My favorite, and the most discussed, activities in Richmond are hiking/trial-running, kayaking, and biking.

Hiking and Biking in Richmond

There are so many trails that its hard to not say that Richmond is one of the best spots on the East Coast. The James River Park System and the combining trails are a great place for adventure with beautiful scenery. The main part of the park is a 4-mile loop that is accessible year round and caters to hikers and bikers, but it welcomes all who wish to experience a good trail run or just a nice walk.

Biking these trails are just as fun. I am just a beginner in this area and Richmond has a ton of trails that are just right for beginners. The area really does cater to any level of experience one has with these particular activities and I would have to say that is one of its greatest qualities. Not only is there a trail for you, but if you are unsure of yourself, as I was, there are plenty of companies that will give you lessons and even tours of the best spots to ride or hike that best fit your level.

Kayaking in Richmond

There are just as many courses to tackle, as there are trails. If you are more of a water person or you want to experience some type of kayaking for the first time there is a course for you. There are also companies that will give you lessons and tours of the waters if you want to train before embarking on your own trip. My personal favorites are relaxing rides down flat waters and taking random fishing excursions from time to time. I have yet to find a better place to kayak on the east coast.

Trail Facts

There is a network of trails running through the James River Park System. There are miles of park trails and they are all at your leisure from dawn to dusk. Trailrunner Magazine named Richmond one of the best trail-running towns in 2009. There are a number of events and races held within the park system every year. They have trails that range from about a quarter of a mile to as far as nine miles long. Beginner or advanced, there is a trail that suites you.
