About the Gorge

The Columbia River Gorge is an 80-mile canyon of the Columbia River that stretches down from Canada, Idaho, Washington State, and ending at the eastern reaches of the Portland metropolitan area. Up to 4,000 feet (1,200 m) deep, the canyon runs through the Cascade Range, extending roughly from the confluence of the Columbia with the Deschutes River. The gorge furnishes the only navigable route through the Cascades and the only water connection between the Columbia River Plateau and the Pacific Ocean.

The gorge is managed by the United States Forest Service and it is called the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area

This huge mass of land is highly popular for a wide range of activities, including one you may not have thought of—windsurfing and kitesurfing! The wind tunnel effect from river is what makes these activites so popular here.
